The Fourth Forum on Communication and Border Governance, co-organized by the Institute of Communication and Border Governance and the School of Journalism and Communication at Jinan University, convened at the Panyu Campus on July 12. The forum, themed Border Governance in the Era of Artificial Intelligence,”drew more than 80 experts from 37 domestic institutions, including the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Tianjin University, Lanzhou University, Zhejiang Normal University, Xinjiang Normal University, and Jinan University itself.
Opening remarks
•Sun Yu, secretary of the Party Committee at Jinan University, highlighted opportunities and challenges in border governance amid rapid AI advancements. He stressed the need to transform governance concepts and methods through technology and to integrate AI into practical border governance work. He described the forum as a vital platform for idea exchange, inviting participants to offer forward-looking insights and actionable paths for AI-driven border governance.
•Zhi Tingrong, dean of the School of Journalism and Communication, emphasized governance as a multi-stakeholder endeavor requiring broad participation. He noted the college's ongoing efforts to tell Xinjiang's stories through interviews, short videos, and documentaries, and he looked forward to deeper collaboration with the national academic community to advance the study of communication and border governance.
Keynotes and themes
•Ma Da, deputy director of the National Committee for the Compilation of Qing History and researcher at the China Institute of Borderland Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, urged scholars to derive border governance theory from Chinese history and contribute to building a distinctive Chinese knowledge system. He encouraged researchers to be versatile and strategic, capable of studying, writing, lecturing, and leading research initiatives.
•Seven experts delivered keynote speeches at the opening session, followed by a sub-forum featuring robust exchanges on six themes:
Modernization of Border Governance in the AI era
Construction of the Chinese national community in border areas amid AI
International communication of Chinese border issues in the AI era
Media and the digital frontier
Construction of an autonomous knowledge system for Chinese border studies in the AI era
Practice of border governance in China in the AI era
Educational initiatives
•The forum also included a seminar on developing the Frontier Studies graduate curriculum at the School of Journalism and Communication. Experts gathered to discuss content design and teaching methods for the graduate course, aiming to enhance the multidisciplinary impact and effectiveness of the program.
