On March 10th, the 2024 Academic Committee Meeting of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Environmental Quality Collaborative Innovation Joint Laboratory (referred to as the Laboratory) took place in Guangzhou. Over 50 participants joined the meeting both online and in person, including prominent figures such as Academician Zhang Yuanhang, Director of the Laboratory’s Academic Committee, along with Vice Directors Academicians Liu Wenqing, Liu Shaochen, and Dai Minhan. Other attendees included professors and researchers from various institutions, as well as key members from the laboratory's collaborative units.

In her opening remarks, Li Xue, Deputy Director of Jinan University's Science and Technology Research Department, highlighted the importance of ecological environment research to the university's development. She expressed hope that the assembled experts would provide valuable guidance to enhance the laboratory's contributions to the green development of the Greater Bay Area and the overall improvement of environmental quality in Guangdong Province.
Academician Zhang Yuanhang led the session, reviewing the laboratory's work report. Laboratory Director Shao Min presented a comprehensive overview covering the laboratory's positioning, research directions, team development, talent cultivation, research output, and academic influence, as well as its progress in collaborative operations and exchanges.
Committee members praised the laboratory for its achievements in fundamental research, technological innovation, and decision-making support. They provided constructive insights on critical issues for the laboratory’s future, including innovative mechanisms, systems development, and strategies for maximizing resources from Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao.
Emphasizing the need for optimization based on ecological civilization construction priorities, Academician Zhang Yuanhang urged the laboratory to clarify its goals, focus on problem-oriented research, and consolidate resources for specialized research. He called for the laboratory to devise scientific solutions for regional environmental challenges, ultimately supporting sustainable development in the area. Furthermore, he encouraged exploration of innovative mechanisms for integrating ecological governance across the three regions and advocated for regional policy support to enhance the laboratory’s operational efficacy.
In his concluding remarks, Professor Shao Min expressed gratitude to the committee members for their ongoing support and guidance. He committed to implementing the valuable recommendations shared during the meeting and emphasized the laboratory's focus on strengthening environmental technology cooperation among Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao. Shao Min also highlighted the laboratory's intention to actively participate in establishing the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Environmental Science Center.
