The Zhuhai Campus of Jinan University is proud to announce the establishment of a new provincial-level scientific research platform, the Guangdong Artificial Intelligence Enabling Intelligent Logistics Engineering Technology Research Center (referred to as the Center). The Center was officially recognized by the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province as part of its 2024 Engineering Technology Research Centers initiative, marking the fourth provincial-level research platform established on the campus.
Led by Professor Qu Ting, Executive Director of the Campus Management Committee and President of the Zhuhai Research Institute, the Center focuses on the interdisciplinary convergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and logistics management. It will concentrate on four key research areas: AI-enabled intelligent logistics equipment, intelligent logistics communication, intelligent logistics scheduling, and practical AI applications in logistics. The goal is to develop a robust AI-driven intelligent logistics management and control service platform, integrating high-quality resources from both campus and industry. This initiative aims to enhance key technologies critical for the intelligent transformation of logistics, accelerating the application of AI technologies within the logistics sector and contributing to the Greater Bay Area's vision of becoming a global intelligent logistics hub.
The direction of AI + Smart Logistics, spearheaded by the School of Intelligent Systems Science and Engineering/JNU-Industry School of Artificial Intelligence, has garnered attention and support through collaboration with various units, including the Institute of Linkage Packaging Engineering, and the International Energy Institute. The initiative has undertaken over 70 national and provincial key projects, including those under the National Key R&D Program and the Guangdong Provincial Key R&D Program. Additionally, the effort has resulted in the successful completion of more than 80 commissioned projects by industry partners, generating tens of millions of yuan in funding.
In terms of academic impact, the research team associated with this direction has published over 500 high-level academic papers and secured nearly 100 patents, with more than ten patents successfully commercialized. This body of work has facilitated the incubation of four innovative enterprises and has been well-received by businesses, government, and the community alike. Furthermore, in 2021, the Center played a key role in establishing the Guangdong Greater Bay Area Smart Logistics International Technology Cooperation Base.
The new recognition of the Center will further leverage the complementary advantages provided by the Zhuhai Science and Technology Park and the Zhuhai Research Institute in technological innovation. The intent is to attract applied research and development teams from across the region to collaborate within the Jinan University Science and Technology Park (Zhuhai). This centralized approach aims to bolster interdisciplinary construction, innovative talent development, applied technology R&D, and entrepreneurship incubation.
Embracing the Jinan Silicon Valley concept, the Center seeks to bridge the gap in scientific and technological innovation and talent cultivation throughout the institution, providing a model for implementation and a pathway for future initiatives.
