Academic Journey and Influences
Jiang's academic path began at Guilin Normal School and continued through prestigious institutions like Guangxi Normal University and East China Normal University, ultimately leading him to Jinan University. His diverse educational background, spanning various regions of China, has profoundly shaped his literary perspective.
Starting his career at just 19, Jiang began teaching at Guilin Normal School. After the reinstatement of college entrance examinations in 1977, he immersed himself in rigorous study under notable scholars, including Lin Huanping and Wang Yuanhua. This foundational experience fostered his deep appreciation for literature, history, and philosophy, which he believes are interconnected.
Jiang's literary influences were significant; he was inspired by figures like Lu Xun and engaged with both classical and contemporary works, broadening his intellectual horizons. His diverse reading habits and academic pursuits culminated in a robust understanding of literary theory, particularly the intersections of Buddhist studies and literature.

His groundbreaking study on Buddhist literature's influence on ancient Chinese literary theory was the first of its kind in China, earning accolades from scholars like Professor Le Daiyun of Peking University. Jiang's work fills significant gaps in the understanding of religious culture's impact on literature and art, making substantial contributions to the field.

Promoting Lingnan Culture
Jiang is dedicated to highlighting the richness of Lingnan culture, which he describes as fluid, compatible, and creative. He aims to construct a Yue School Criticism, examining the academic traditions that have shaped cultural perspectives in this region since the late Qing Dynasty. His efforts include a series of publications that explore critical issues surrounding Chinese tradition and national identity.

His concept of cultural poetics serves as both a research methodology and a form of cultural consciousness, emphasizing the need to explore literature's cultural and aesthetic significance simultaneously. This dual focus enriches literary research and allows for a more profound understanding of texts.

Engagement with Contemporary Literature
Jiang actively participates in discussions about New Southern Writing, advocating for the integration of geographical, experiential, and imaginative elements in literature. This approach not only expands the scope of literary research but also re-evaluates southern regional culture within a global context, linking China's modernization journey with broader world literature.
In recent years, he has turned his attention to overseas Chinese literature, viewing it as a vital cultural bridge that connects China with the global community. His leadership in the National Social Science Fund's major project on Chinese literary theory and thought underscores his commitment to advancing this field.

Future Aspirations
Now a specially appointed professor at Shantou University, Jiang Shuzhuo continues to explore the relationship between traditional Chinese culture and modernity. He aims to promote the creative transformation of traditional culture, striving to establish an independent discourse system in literary theory while examining the essence of both Lingnan and Chaoshan cultures.
Jiang encapsulates his philosophy with the belief that everyone's life is a book, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and original intention in achieving one's literary dreams.
(Jiang’s message: Stay true to your original intention, persevere, and your literary dreams will come to fruition.)
Jiang Shuzhuo's contributions to literary criticism and cultural studies represent a significant advancement in understanding the complexities of Chinese literature and its global connections. His work not only enriches the academic community but also inspires future generations to explore and appreciate the depth of their cultural heritage.
