Jinan University Researchers Advance 4D Patterned Assembly of Colloidal Particles

Author: Shi Yang, Xin Hongbao

Publisher: College of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering

Date: December 10, 2024

A research team led by Professors Li Baojun and Xin Hongbao from the College of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering at Jinan University has made significant advancements in the field of four-dimensional (4D) patterned assembly of colloidal particles. Their groundbreaking work was published in the esteemed journal Advanced Materials and is titled Adaptive opto-thermal-hydrodynamic manipulation and polymerization (AOTHMAP) for 4D colloidal patterning. Assistant Professor Shi Yang from the Institute of Nanophotonics serves as the first author of the paper, with Professors Li and Xin as co-corresponding authors.

 Research Overview:

The innovative study introduces a method that combines light, heat, and fluid dynamics to manipulate colloidal particles for precise patterning. This technique utilizes a single laser beam to automatically transport, position, and immobilize these particles through a mechanism that leverages light-induced hydrodynamic forces, optical forces, and photothermal polymerization.

The AOTHMAP technique allows for the creation of intricate micro/nanostructures in one, two, and three dimensions, accommodating colloidal particles of various sizes and materials. One of the most significant features of this method is its ability to enable 4D patterning through dynamic alterations of the structures achieved, such as shrinkage and restructuring, by utilizing pH-responsive hydrogel adhesives. This dynamic capability is particularly notable for biological applications, as it facilitates the patterning of functional bio-structures, including bio-micromotors.

The AOTHMAP represents a versatile and efficient strategy for colloidal patterning, offering vast potential for applications in intelligent manufacturing, optoelectronic integration, and biofabrication.

This research received support from several projects, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Foundation.
