On October 29, 2024, JNU organized a symposium titled Focusing on Physical and Mental Health to Escort Growth and Development - Secretary and Student Representatives Face to Face. The event featured Sun Yu, Deputy Secretary of the University Party Committee, who engaged in meaningful discussions with student representatives on promoting physical and mental well-being.

The symposium was structured into three main parts:
1. Current State of Mental Health: Ma Li, head of the Standing Committee of the Student Representative Assembly, presented findings from a recent questionnaire on student mental health, analyzing stress sources and proposing relevant strategies.
2. Psychological Growth Process: Participants engaged in discussions about the psychological processes involved in personal growth and development.
3. Building a Positive Atmosphere: The focus was on creating a supportive and uplifting environment for all students.
During the event, Sun Yu listened attentively to students’ experiences and concerns, providing thoughtful responses to their questions. He emphasized several key messages:
- Maintain a Calm Mind: Students should learn to manage stress and maintain a positive psychological state.
- Career Planning: It’s important for students to set realistic career goals and adjust their expectations as needed.
- Foster Community: Sun encouraged students to be warm-hearted, promoting interactions among peers from different backgrounds, including those from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and international students.
He also urged relevant departments to monitor students’ physical and mental health closely, ensuring timely support and creating a conducive learning environment.
Wang Yubo, an undergraduate from the College of Pharmacy, expressed appreciation for Secretary Sun’s attentiveness, noting the school’s genuine concern for student well-being. He found the symposium helpful in learning stress-relief techniques.
Zhong Xiaofang, a master’s student in the College of Foreign Studies, highlighted the valuable opportunity for direct communication with school leaders, stating that the insights shared during the symposium contributed to a warm and positive campus atmosphere.
The symposium was attended by leaders and faculty from various departments, including the Student Work Department, Graduate Work Department, Mental Health Education Center, Student Employment Guidance Center, Academic Affairs Office, and the Youth League Committee, reflecting a collective commitment to student health and well-being.
