In a remarkable honor for JNU, two distinguished works authored by professors from JNU have been chosen for inclusion in the 2024 National Philosophy and Social Sciences Achievement Library. The announcement was made by the National Office of Philosophy and Social Sciences, underscoring the academic excellence JNU strives to achieve.
Professor Liu Tao’s groundbreaking book, Rhetoric of Communication, from the School of Journalism and Communication, and Professor Guo Yuan’s comprehensive volume, Research on the Modern South China Sea Territory, from the School of Literature, were both recognized, marking a significant achievement as they rank third nationally and first within Guangdong Province. This selection represents the highest accolade JNU has received in the achievement library to date.
Rhetoric of Communication redefines communication research through the lens of rhetorical epistemology. By framing communication issues within the established knowledge system of rhetoric, the book aims to broaden the scholarly understanding of rhetoric's role in communication studies. This innovative fusion has given rise to a new academic discipline—communication rhetoric. The work meticulously constructs a knowledge system that encompasses basic theories, methodologies, and practical applications of communication rhetoric, anchored in its historical and theoretical roots.
Similarly, Research on the Modern South China Sea Territory draws upon a substantial project funded by the National Social Science Fund, authored by Professor Guo Yuan. Spanning over 900,000 words, the book delves into ten meticulously researched chapters that tackle complex topics, including the historical claims of Japan and France on the Xisha Islands, the Sino-French dispute over these territories, and the intricate negotiations between France and Britain regarding Nanwei Island (Spratly Island). This comprehensive examination not only provides insight into the territorial dynamics of the South China Sea during a pivotal historical period but also emphasizes the interplay of regional and international factors in these disputes.
The Achievement Library serves as a prestigious national platform that recognizes and promotes high-quality scholarship in philosophy and social sciences, reflecting the forefront of academic research in China. This year, a total of 61 works were selected, and these achievements will receive funding and publication support from the National Social Science Planning Office.
The inclusion of Professors Liu and Guo’s works in this esteemed library is a testament to JNU's commitment to advancing knowledge and excellence in the social sciences, setting a benchmark for future research endeavors.
