In a proactive effort to enhance laboratory safety and protect the well-being of students and faculty, Jinan University conducted a series of safety inspections across its campuses from September 18th to 20th, 2024. These inspections aimed to identify and mitigate potential safety hazards, ensuring a secure and stable campus environment.

The inspections took place at the Shipai Campus, Panyu Campus, and Zhuhai Campus, while safety evaluations were also organized at the Shenzhen Campus and Chinese Campus. The Tenth Bureau of the Central United Front Work Department facilitated cooperative inspections between Jinan University and Huaqiao University to improve safety management across their laboratories.
On September 19th, an expert group from Huaqiao University visited the Shipai Campus and conducted on-site inspections in several key laboratories, including those within the School of Life Science and Technology, the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Central Nervous System and Regeneration Research Institute, and the School of Basic Medicine and Public Health. The inspection was attended by leaders from the Tenth Bureau and Jinan University's Vice President, Weng Jian.
On September 18th, a joint expert group from Guangdong Ocean University, Guangdong Medical University, and Lingnan Normal University conducted a thorough inspection of laboratories in the School of Pharmacy, School of Chemistry and Materials Science, School of Environment and Climate Science, and School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering at the Panyu Campus. Subsequently, on September 20th, another expert group from the School of Environment and Climate and the School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering assessed the laboratories of the School of Packaging Engineering and the Institute of Advanced and Applied Chemical Synthesis at the Zhuhai Campus.
The multifaceted approach of these inspections aims to effectively pinpoint potential hazards and address issues within laboratory settings. The initiative seeks to break the cycle of complacency often associated with self-design, self-inspection, self-circulation, and self-satisfaction, advancing the standards of laboratory safety management at the university.
In addition to identifying hazards, the inspections included the establishment of a safety hazard ledger to document findings. This record will facilitate follow-up actions, urging all departments to undertake necessary rectifications and treatments to ensure a safe laboratory environment for all involved.
Through these safety inspections, Jinan University is committed to reinforcing its safety protocols, striving to create a secure atmosphere conducive to learning and research.
