Recently, Professor Yang Guanghua's team from the School of Intelligent Science and Engineering/School of Artificial Intelligence Industry published a review paper titled Natural Language Processing for Smart Healthcare in IEEE Reviews in Biomedical Engineering, a top international journal in biomedical engineering (IF: 17.2, CiteScore: 31.7). This significant work has been recognized as both an ESI hot paper and a highly cited ESI paper in the engineering field.

The paper reviews the technological advancements of natural language processing (NLP) in smart healthcare, detailing its applications in various medical scenarios such as clinical decision support, hospital management, public health, and drug research and development. It also addresses the critical role of NLP technology in recent medical issues, including the novel coronavirus pandemic and mental health challenges. Additionally, the research team discusses aspects like interpretability, end-to-end applications, and small sample learning, while highlighting the limitations of current research and suggesting future directions.

Since its official publication in January 2024, this article has garnered widespread attention, ranking among the top 10 Popular Articles for five consecutive months and receiving over 80 citations (with more than 50 citations from Web of Science). The paper's recognition as one of the ESI hot papers and highly cited papers underscores its impact and significance within the engineering community.

The first author of the paper is Dr. Zhou Binggui, while Professor Yang Guanghua and Professor Ma Shaodan from the University of Macau serve as co-corresponding authors. An important co-author from the Governance research team also contributed significantly to the paper.
