Jinan University students showcased exceptional talent at the 17th National College Student Information Security Competition (Innovation and Practice Ability Competition), held on July 20-21, 2024, at Sichuan University. Jointly organized by the Cyberspace Administration of China, the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education, and the Teaching Guidance Committee for Cyberspace Security Majors, the finals saw JNU achieving remarkable success with a first prize and an innovation award, ranking sixth nationally and first among universities in South China.

The Xp0int team, mentored by Professor Wei Linfeng, assistant director of the National Local Joint Engineering Center for Network Security Detection and Protection at Jinan University, earned the first prize—an outstanding accomplishment that emphasizes the team's rigorous preparation and expertise. Additionally, the Cybersecurity team from Jinan University's Zhuhai Campus was awarded the Innovation Single Award in the Capture The Flag (CTF) Industrial Control category, one of only two such awards presented nationwide. Professor Wei Linfeng was further honored with the National Excellent Guidance Teacher Award for his exceptional mentorship.

The competition featured a diverse range of challenges including CTF problem-solving, AWDP (Attack and Defense Workbench) competitions, comprehensive penetration tests, and an innovative security application development segment. These events thoroughly assessed the participants' theoretical knowledge and practical skills in real-world scenarios, covering cutting-edge fields such as trusted computing, industrial control system security, and vehicle networking security.

The final competition format included several advanced modules, such as the AI Trusted Computing Build stage, industrial control security and vehicle networking security challenges, and AWDP network confrontations. The competition attracted elite cybersecurity teams from universities across the nation, enabling a comprehensive evaluation of their capabilities and strengths.

The National College Student Information Security Competition is recognized as a premier event in the national college competition directory. It stands as the only A-class competition organized by the Ministry of Education specifically in the field of cybersecurity. This year's competition drew unprecedented participation, with a record-breaking 2,830 teams and 9,444 contestants from 543 universities, including Hong Kong, registering to compete. After nearly four months of strenuous competition involving a national online preliminary round and eight regional rounds, only 80 outstanding teams advanced to the national finals.
