In a remarkable showcase of academic excellence, JNU has been awarded a total of ten honors at the 9th Higher Education Science Research Excellent Achievement Award (Humanities and Social Sciences), as announced by the Ministry of Education. These accolades include one first prize, two second prizes, and seven third prizes, marking a significant achievement that underscores the university's strong foundation in humanities and social science research.
Among the standout recognitions is a first prize awarded to Professor Liu Tao for his groundbreaking work in Visual Rhetoric within the Journalism and Communication discipline. This achievement not only highlights Professor Liu’s contributions but also represents a significant milestone for JNU, building on the previous success of Professor Zhan Bohui, who secured the first prize in the 8th Ministry of Education Awards.
The full list of achievements includes:
1. First Prize: Liu Tao - Visual Rhetoric, Journalism and Communication Studies.
2. Second Prize: Gan Xianfeng - Development History of Chinese News Comics, Journalism and Communication Studies.
3. Second Prize: Li Xiaoxi – “Does the inquiry letter from the exchange have a regulatory effect? Text Analysis Paper Based on Mergers and Acquisitions Report”, Management.
4. Third Prize: Jiang Shuzhuo – “The Spirit of New China and the Generation of Literary Classics”, Chinese Literature.
5. Third Prize: Liu Zenghe - Silver and War: A Study of Financial Strategies During Wartime in the Late Qing Dynasty, History.
6. Third Prize: Li Wenjing – “Country-Level Institutions and Management Earnings Forecasts”, Economics.
7. Third Prize: Zhang Cui – “What Makes Cities More Conducive to Entrepreneurship?” Economics.
8. Third Prize: Zeng Yiguo - Culture Studies on Media, Journalism and Communication Studies.
9. Third Prize: Qin Chenglin - China's Regional Economy Driven by High-Speed Railways, Economics.
10. Third Prize: Chen Zhiping – “A Study on the Two Transmission Systems and Related Issues of the book Essential Account on Calligraphy , Art Studies.
The awards span six disciplines, with honors earned in Journalism and Communication Studies (three awards), Economics (three awards), as well as single awards in Management, Chinese Literature, History, and Art. The distinction comprises an equal distribution of five written papers and five creative works.
Professor Liu Tao’s book Visual Rhetoric delves deeply into the epistemology and methodology of visual communication, establishing a foundational knowledge structure and introducing six core theories: linguistic theory, contextual theory, imagery theory, metonymy theory, metaphor theory, and schema theory. This notable work was also featured in the 2019 National Philosophy and Social Science Achievement Library.
The Ministry of Education’s Excellent Achievement Award for Scientific Research in Higher Education Institutions is the highest honor in the humanities and social sciences arena within China, recognizing the premier standards of philosophical and social science research across Chinese universities. This year, a total of 1,496 achievements were nominated for the award, with 1,196 received for works and papers, alongside other categories recognizing consulting reports, popular reading materials, and youth achievements.
