In a recent interview with Wu Shanxiong, the visionary founder of the British Chinese Education Promotion Association, the journey of Chinese language education in the UK unfolds. Commemorating the 30th anniversary of the association's establishment, Wu Shanxiong sheds light on the transformative impact and unwavering dedication that have shaped the landscape of Chinese education in the UK.
Reflecting on the inception of the association three decades ago, Wu Shanxiong reminisces about the landscape of Chinese education in the UK, predominantly overseen by the Hong Kong and British governments. At that time, instruction primarily focused on Cantonese and traditional Chinese characters, with a limited number of Chinese schools offering education. The curriculum, influenced by colonial undertones, emphasized language proficiency but lacked a comprehensive exploration of Chinese culture and history. Driven by a fervent desire to preserve Chinese heritage and nurture cultural roots among overseas Chinese youth, Wu Shanxiong founded the British Chinese Education Promotion Association in 1993, a pivotal moment that marked the beginning of a transformative journey.
