Wang Rui, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), and a JNU chair professor, spoke on the history of pharmacy at Peking Union Medical College and promoting the spirit of scientists as the fourth lecture in the JNU Academic Lecture series, co-sponsored by JNU's Academic Committee and College of Pharmacy, on April 10.

Starting with the development history, Wang, who is also executive director of the Institute of Materia Medica of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and PUMC, described some of PUMC's landmark achievements in pharmacy and its future development direction. He shared the deeds of some great personages in pharmacy, including Dr. Ko Kuei Chen, the pioneer of modern pharmacological research in Chinese medicine, Liang Xiaotian, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) a pioneer in applying modern spectroscopy to structural chemistry of natural products, CAS Academician Zhou Tonghui, the trailblazer of doping detection in China, CAE Academician Liu Gengtao, who opened up the field of liver biochemical pharmacology, and Prof. Han Rui, who pioneered the study of anti-tumor drugs in China.

Afterward, Wang interacted with teachers and students on how to promote innovative drug discovery and how to do basic research well. Prof. Li Hongjian, secretary of the College of Pharmacy's Party Committee, presented a souvenir to Wang on behalf of the college.

The lecture is an important activity organized by JNU's Academic Committee to strengthen the committee's development and give full play to the important role of professors in academic research in promoting academic exchanges and development.
