Prof. Mo Cehui's team from JNU's College of Life Science and Technology won the top 3 position among the first prizes in the Environmental Protection Science and Technology Awards, announced  by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. Its research project was titled Key Technology and Application for Safe Utilization of Agricultural Soil Contaminated with Typical New Pollutants.

The Committee for Rewarding Science and Technology of Environmental Protection gave awards to 56 projects, 10 first prizes and 45 second prizes. 

JNU's winning project elucidates the contamination characteristics and risks of new contaminants such as phthalates (PAEs) in typical soil-crop agricultural systems in the Pearl River Delta region. Through screening, it produces a new type of crop with low accumulation/strong degradation of new contaminants and illuminates its cultivation mechanism. Moreover, it acquires a batch of multifunctional microbial strains and reveals their working mechanism, leading to the development of the multifunctional bio-organic fertilizer and developing green remediation technology based on crop-functional microbe of low accumulation/strong degradation+agronomic measures.

Mo, the project leader, is engaged mainly in research and teaching in the fields of environmental biogeochemistry, agroecology and safety of agricultural products. He has led dozens of key projects for the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Joint Foundation and the Guangdong Natural Science Foundation. He has published more than 300 papers and authorized over 30 national invention patents. As associate editor, he has published teaching material at the national level and one monograph. He has previously won the Guangdong Ding Ying Science and Technology Award; first prize in the Guangdong Science and Technology Awards; the China Industry-University-Research Cooperation Innovation Award and the China Invention Innovation Award.
