JNU's School of Stomatology held a paper-cutting aesthetic experience activity for Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas Chinese students on Nov 25. The speaker was Lian Xiaohong, the representative inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage Guangzhou paper-cutting.
Lian introduced the origin of Guangzhou paper-cutting and the five major elements of paper-cutting: round, sharp, square, lacking and thread. She emphasized the rules of five elements: round as the autumn moon, sharp as tip of wheat, square as black brick, shape like a sawtooth and thread as fine as a whisker. She also pointed out that not all works accomplished with scissors are considered paper-cutting. Paper-cutting works can be done in three ways: engraving, cutting and tearing.
Engraving requires delicate operation to turn it out a fine layout, while split can operate with a free mind, but the work is not very regular.
After the activity, students said paper-cutting cultivated their interests in the art, conveys the charm of Chinese traditional culture and trains their handiwork ability and design awareness. Moreover, they said, they have a deep understanding that patience, care and dedication are essential qualities of an excellent dentist.
