Prof. Wang Yong, head of the Oil Bio-Refining and Nutrition Innovation Team in JNU's College of Science and Engineering, participated in the project Key Technologies and Industrialization of Upgrading and Manufacturing Oil for the Food Industry, which won second prize in the National Science and Technology Advances Awards, presented on Nov. 3 in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

The project, focusing on trans fatty acids in edible oils, is the first research and development in China to carry out basic theory, processing technology, and core equipment design and manufacture related to non-hydrogenated oils. This project has improved the basic theoretical system of non-hydrogenated special oils and fats; overcome technical problems in the core processing; developed key equipment with independent intellectual property rights; achieved the innovative manufacturing of non-hydrogenated special oils and fat products; and formulated national industry standards. The project was jointly completed by JNU, Jiangnan University, Henan University of Technology, COFCO Nutrition and Health Research Institute Co., Ltd., Jiahe Food Industry Co., Ltd., Shanghai Hairong Food Technology Co., Ltd., and Zhaoqing Jiayi Food Machinery Equipment Co., Ltd.
Wang's team, committed to research and achievement transformation of edible oil bio-processing and functional oil, has made important progress in enzymatic preparation of functional oils such as palm-based oil and diglyceride for healthy food. In the last five years, the team has played a key role in the approval of three provincial scientific research platforms, including the Guangdong International Joint Research Center for Oil Bio-Refining and Nutrition Safety. The team won first prize in the Guangdong Science and Technology Progress Awards and seven other scientific and technological awards on the provincial and ministerial levels. It has presided over one key international (regional) cooperative research project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and one key project of National Key Research and Development Plan-Intergovernmental International Scientific and Technological Innovation Cooperation.
