The finals of Jinan University's ninth Challenge Cup Undergraduate Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Contest and the outstanding works exhibition were held on March 12 in the library on Shipai campus, JNU's main campus. The contest included the first Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Overseas Chinese Students' Special Competition.

Sun Yu, deputy secretary of JNU's Party Committee, said extracurricular academic science and technology activities are important to improve students' overall quality. On the day of the finals, 157 teams from JNU's five campuses gathered to show teachers and students their achievements in academic and technological innovation. Since the competition was launched in October, nearly 800 entries had been submitted, with nearly 4,000 students participating and over 600 instructors, a record number of both entries and students.

Each team introduced its innovative work through exhibition boards, videos and demonstrations. This competition also set up oral presentations to help the teachers and students better understand the contest.

During the competition, the ceremony presenting the flag to the 2021 science and technology innovative training camp for Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas Chinese students took place, as did the first Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Overseas Chinese Students Special Competition. In the special competition, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas Chinese students assumed their duties as work directors, accounting for more than half the total number of team members to further promote exchanges with students from the Chinese mainland. The competition attracted 45 teams, consisting of nearly 200 Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas Chinese students.

The entries were divided into three categories: social investigation reports and academic papers on philosophy and social sciences; academic papers about natural science; and scientific and technological invention. The first category covered six disciplines: philosophy, economics, sociology, law, education and management. The latter two involved five disciplines: mechanics and control; information technology; mathematics and physics; life sciences; and energy and chemical engineering. The works were required to be scientific, advanced and, most important, practical.

From the participating teams, 24 core journal papers and 107 SCI papers (including SSCI/CSSCI papers) have been published and 40 patents of various types applied for, including patents licensing.
