Prof. Huang Ailian, 104, founder of JNU's nursing discipline, was honored as Excellent Individual in a century of Peking Union Medical College Nursing School, in a seminar titled New Century of PUMC Nursing Education: Epochal and Prospective Nursing Education in Beijing on Sept. 28.

Hosted by PUMC, the seminar was held to pass on the PUMC spirit -- precision and perseverance in mind; diligence and devotion in hand-- and explore reform in higher nursing education. National elites in the field attended to celebrate the 100th anniversary of higher nursing education at PUMC. Chen Weiju, dean of JNU's School of Nursing, was an invited guest and accepted the medal for Huang.

The seminar announced the list of 27 Historic Individuals in a Century of PUMC Nursing School and the list of 10 Excellent Individuals, including Huang .

Founded on Sept. 28, 1920, the PUMC School of Nursing pioneered modern nursing education in China. For a century, it has upheld PUMC's initial school motto, Science Helps Humanity, and the School of Nursing's motto, Diligent, Prudent, Alert, Considerate. It offered courses in natural science, social sciences and the humanities, and practiced the teaching philosophy of valuing clinical and social practice. It has contributed to the construction of theoretical and technical nursing systems and the development of nursing in China.

Huang Ailian
Prof. Huang comes from Gaoyao, Guangdong. After graduating from PUMC's Nursing School, she successively became a nurse at the PUMC Hospital; dean of the Julia M. Turner Training School for Nurses; vice president of Guangzhou First Training School for Nurses; and president of Nursing School of Guangzhou Second People's Hospital.

She was vice president and nursing director of the First Affiliated Hospital of JNU from 1970 to 1984. Since 1993, she has held the titles of president emerita of the   Affiliated Nursing School of the JNU's Faculty of Medical Science; president emerita of Guangzhou Nursing School; honorary board chairman of the Guangdong branch of the Chinese Nursing Association; geriatric nursing counselor to the academic committees of three provinces in central South China; an executive member of Chinese Nursing Association; and a coauthor of Fundamentals of Nursing Psychology. Under her leadership, the First Affiliated Hospital of JNU became one of the earliest units among Guangdong to offer holistic nursing services. 

In 1996, Huang was a nominee for the Florence Nightingale Medal, the highest honor in nursing.
