Jinan University held 2020 opening ceremonies on its Panyu, Shipai, Zhuhai, Shenzhen and Guangyuan east campuses on Sept. 21. The ceremonies had main venues and parallel sessions, allowing graduates and postgraduates to attend either online or off. New JNUers from more than 50 countries and regions all over the world gathered online, breathing new life into the university. After the ceremonies, the seven-day freshman training camp kicked off.
This year's class totals 7,071 new undergraduates, 4,760 from the Chinese mainland and 2,311 from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and abroad. New postgraduates total 5,365, including 4,572 master's degree candidates and 442 doctoral candidates from the Chinese mainland, and 309 master's degree candidates and 42 doctoral candidates from the rest of the world.

President Song Xianzhong extended his warm welcome and sincere congratulations to the 2020 freshmen. I hope that you will study Jinan like a good book, inherit the Jinan spirit, and get ready to serve your country, develop your striving spirit, create new knowledge, broaden your academic horizons and pass on Chinese culture, he said.

As teachers' representative, Prof. Zheng Xian of the School of Economics, an outstanding young teacher of Guangdong, taught the students how to become real JNUers who combine knowledge and action with loyalty, sincerity, integrity and respect. Giving examples from his own school experience, he said he hoped the students would become active learners; cultivate lifelong learning habits; think independently, critically and creatively; and become cooperative, inclusive and grateful.

The current student representative Ye Zhufeng, a postgraduate in the College of Information Science and Technology/Cybers Security's 2019 class, shared his thoughts about university life. Ye characterized JNUers as people of lofty aspirations, broad knowledge and high morality. Huang Rutong, a new undergraduate in the Sihai College, said unbridled exploration and relentless pursuit of dreams were encouraged at JNU, which upholds the motto of loyalty, sincerity, integrity and respect.

Afterward, school leaders pinned Jinan University badges to new students' shirts. Student representatives from all campuses led the oath-taking and read the university motto.
After the opening ceremony, the freshman training camp officially opened, giving all the new undergraduates their very first lecture in Jinan's characteristics.
JNU Party Secretary Lin Rupeng announced the faculty list of the 2020 freshman training camp and gave the camp flag to the student representatives.

Deputy Party Secretary Sun Yu introduced the freshman training camp as a JNU-initiated orientation program based on the reality that JNU is a university for overseas Chinese students and diversity. The camp includes experiential education, symposiums, martial-arts class, group projects and challenges, and Lingnan culture study, creating a sound climate that embraces the slogan Love learning, life, sports, innovation and JNU.
Before the ceremony, all attendees watched a feature film, New JNUers Who Brave the Winds and Waves, made by the university's publicity department and the Networking and Educational Technology Center, and listened to A 100-Year Road, and the university anthem, sung by the freshman chorus from the College of Arts.
