In the 2019 Best Chinese Subjects Ranking released by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy on Oct. 30, JNU has 38 first-level subjects in 10 categories ranked in the top 50%, with journalism and communication ranking in the top 4% and fourth nationwide. The total number of listed subjects ranks 22nd among national universities and second among provincial ones.
This ranking list covers all colleges and universities with authorized academic postgraduate degrees in the first-level discipline. It published the top 50% of universities in each discipline, with 4,986 subjects from 460 universities.
 
This year, JNU's Department of Journalism and Communication continued to rank among the top 5% in China. Six other disciplines ranked are among the top 5% to 10%: traditional Chinese medicine，Chinese language and literature, applied economics, ecology, business administration，and environmental science and engineering. Fifteen disciplines ranked in the top 10% to 25% and 16 in the top 25% to 50%.

Shanghai Ranking Consultancy summarized the total score in each subject from five index categories: high-end talents, scientific research projects, achievement awards, academic papers and talent training. All the data came from third-party data sources such as the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and international and domestic literature databases. After standardized data-cleansing and subject classification developed by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, the index data of various subject points were obtained uniformly.
