JNU's School of Journalism and Communication has been recognized as an Excellent Group of the National Educational System by China's Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and the Ministry of Education.
It's the creative, united and ambitious team, including all teachers and students, that is the highlight, said Prof. Zhi Tingrong, executive principal of the school, in an interview. To build the team, attracting excellent talents is a priority. In the last four years, the school has attracted more than 20 new talents.
Zhi said the school should also focus on scientific research and teaching. It is currently working on 26 projects supported by the National Social Science Fund of China, 10 of them major projects, and 27 projects approved at the provincial and ministerial level.
In 2018, the school's educational activity on the theme of journalism under Marxism was honored as one of National Innovative Projects of Journalism and Communication Teaching.
In research on public opinion analysis based on big data, Prof. Tang Jingtai, a doctoral supervisor, has provided a basis for formulating and implementing public policies on the Belt and Road Initiative, cross-cultural communication and traffic control.
Driven by scientific research and public service, JNU's journalism teaching is developing rapidly. In 2017, journalism and communication reached level A in the fourth round of national discipline assessment. In 2019, both the journalism and advertising majors got the first international media certificate issued by China and Russia.
The school has also won the state-level teaching achievement second prize, and the province-level teaching achievement first prize in the fifth, sixth and seventh sessions of Guangdong higher education teaching assessment contests.
Founded in 2013, the school welcomes not only domestic students but also international students from countries including Germany and Turkey, as well as overseas Chinese. It also cooperates in research and talent training with many universities in the United States, Britain, Sweden, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
It has trained more than 6,000 talents at home and abroad. Among them a Hong Kong student, Chen Jiarui, has set up a Time Machine film and television team at the school; Huang Yuanyuan has had her slogan The World Is in Front of You, and We Are by Your Side selected as the final one for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo volunteers; Sun Weikang was the only JNU student to represent the Road Haulage Association (RHA) members at the 2019 Cannes Creative Festival; and Fang Yimin manages the public WeChat account Rebecca's Whimsical World, writing about fashion. Many are members of Hong Kong and Macao media, famous entrepreneurs, and winners of honors including the China News Award, the National Top 100 Journalists and the gold award of the Cannes Advertising Festival.
