Prof. Guan Bai-Ou, dean of JNU's Institute of Photonics Technology, has been elected an OSA Fellow by the Optical Society of America.

Founded in 1916, the OSA is an authoritative international academic organization in the optics field with more than 22,000 members from over 100 countries and regions. OSA Fellow, its highest academic honor, is given to experts selected through a process of nomination by current fellows, evaluation by the Fellow Members Committee, review by the Award Committee and confirmation by the Board of Directors.
Guan, whose research in optical fiber sensing technology and application is supported by the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, has been selected as a pacesetter of science and technology innovation in the National 10,000 Talents Program and an outstanding talent in the Guangdong Special Support Plan. He has headed many projects, including at least two key projects of the National Science Fund, a key international cooperation project, a key project of the Joint Fund and a general project. He has also published papers describing research progress in authoritative journals such as IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology and IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics. In recent years, his team has won major awards at three major international conferences -- the International Conference on Optical Fibre Sensors, the European Workshop on Optical Fibre Sensors and the Asia-Pacific Optical Sensors Conference -- in optical fiber sensing, including best paper, outstanding creativity and best student paper.
The advanced optical fiber sensor technology developed by Guan has been applied to such major projects as the Guangzhou landmark the Canton Tower, the transmission line of the west-to-east power transmission project, the Xiang-GUI high-speed rail line, the Hong Kong Qingma Bridge and the Hong Kong Kowloon-Guangzhou railway.
