JNU`s School of Environment and Tsinghua University`s Institute of Environmental Chemistry held the 14th Forum on Persistent Organic Pollutants and Conference on Environmental Safety of Chemicals (POPs Forum 2019), as well as the 15th Anniversary of the Global Entry Into Force of the Stockholm Convention, on May 17 in Guangzhou. The events attracted more than 600 scholars from China and abroad.

The meeting scene

POPs are a kind of persistent organic pollutants with refractory, bioenrichment and long-distance migration, arousing great concerns in the international community. With China as one of the 152 member countries, the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, signed as part of the initiative of the United Nations Environment Program, took effect on May 17, 2004. This year marks its 15th anniversary.

Zeng Yongping, dean of JNU's School of Environment, won the Outstanding Contribution Award in the Elimination of Persistent Organic Pollutants, presented annually at the POPs Forum to commend scientists making significant contributions in this area. At the forum, Zeng delivered a speech titled Environmental Behaviors and Human Exposure Assessment of Typical Pollutants in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. He described the Greater Bay Area`s general situation, regional environmental geochemical processes of organic pollutants, and regional population exposure and health risk assessment.
