Typhoon Mangkhut lashed Jinan University on Sept. 16. Before and after Mangkhut hit campus, school leaders and hundreds of staff members stuck to their posts, wasted no time in carrying out disaster relief efforts.

Mangkhut swept down 28 big trunks, more than 50 trees and several street lamps. Some buildings, including student dormitories, the College of Pharmacy, office buildings and teaching buildings, were damaged. Windows and doors on several student dormitories were broken. A burst pipe caused by the collapse of a tree led to a partial water shutdown. The Panyu, Zhuhai and Shenzhen campuses also suffered varying degrees of damage. But no teachers, students or front-line workers were injured.

On the morning of Sept. 16, JNU Party Secretary Lin Rupeng held a meeting to arrange prevention work in detail. President Song Xianzong, together with the working group, supervised the defense work on the spot at the College of Chinese Language and Culture, and Vice President Zhang Ronghua visited workers at the emergency shelter on JNU's Panyu Campus.

On Sept. 17, classes and campus life resumed in a clean and orderly manner, except that Jianyang Road was still closed. At 10 p.m. the night before, JNU staff members were busy clearing the road. Vice President Liu Jiesheng joined the front line, going to Zhuhai campus to guide the cleanup.
