The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine of the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University was honored with the title National Pioneer Worker by the All-China Federation of Trade Unions and the General Trade Union of Guangdong Province on May 1, the international Labor Day. They recognized advanced collectives and workers who have made outstanding contributions to the economic and social development of China and Guangdong. It was two collectives of direct trade unions under the Guangdong Educational, Scientific, Cultural and Health Industry Workers' Trade Union that won titles as advanced groups of China. Nine individuals won titles as advanced individuals of Guangdong; Prof. Guan Bai'ou, dean of JNU’s Institute of Photonics Technology, was awarded the Guangdong Province May 1st Labor Medal.   

Established 40 years ago, the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine has gradually set up service-oriented system to make its patients with chronic diseases feel at home while in the hospital. The First Affiliated Hospital has achieved Industry-university-research-application integration in multidisciplinary cooperation. The department has become a key clinical specialty at the provincial level, and its speech therapy and child autism therapy rank at the top of their fields in China.

Dedicated to teaching, Guan has also been conducting research on fiber optic sensors and their application to reach the cutting edge of his field internationally and meet application needs. He received funding from the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and was selected as a leader in science and technology innovation for the 10,000 Talents Program, also known as the National High-Level Personnel Special Support Program. He has led 25 scientific research projects, including three key fund projects of the National Natural Science Foundation and three key projects of Guangdong. He has also published 189 papers indexed by SCI with a citation frequency of 2,013.
