The Guangdong Department of Education has released the list of disciplines and candidates named to the 2017 Pearl River Scholar Position Program in Colleges and Universities. From JNU, Prof. Weng Jian of the College of Information Science and Technology, Prof. Zhao Jingrong of the College of Liberal Arts, Prof. Ma Chunbo of the College of Economics, and Prof. Matthias Thürer of the College of Electrical and Information Engineering were appointed distinguished professors of the Pearl River Scholars. Research fellow Zhou Bin of the College of Life Science and Technology, Prof. Zhang Liandong of the College of Management, Prof. Li Zhiwu of the College of Electrical and Information Engineering and Prof. Liang Huan of JNU’s First Affiliated Hospital were appointed Pearl River Scholar chair professors. Prof. Zhang Ning of the College of Economics, Prof. Wu Qing of the College of Liberal Arts and Prof. Xu Wenwen of the College of Life Science and Technology were named Young Pearl River Scholars. National economics and biomedical engineering were approved as disciplines of Pearl River Scholar Position Program. To date, JNU has had 15 distinguished professors, 14 Pearl River Scholar chair professors and 8 Young Pearl River Scholars.

Launched by the Guangdong Department of Education in 1999, the Distinguished Professor Position Program in Colleges and Universities aims to implement the strategy of helping Guangdong Province prosper through science, education and talent; attract and select excellent young and middle-aged academic talents; and cultivate pace-setters on the leading level of international or domestic scientific research. The program was renamed the Pearl River Scholar Position Program in Colleges and Universities in 2009 to satisfy new demands for high-level talents under new circumstances. The appointment of Young Pearl River Scholars was added in 2016 on the basis of appointments of distinguished professors of Pearl River Scholars and Pearl River Scholar chair professors.
