Su Hang, a professor in the Institute for Environment and Climate Research, has published a paper in Science Advances, a subordinate journal in the Science family of publications. Titled Reactive Nitrogen Chemistry in Aerosol Water as a Source of Sulfate During Haze Events in China, the paper is a collaboration with researchers at the Max Planck Chemistry Institute and Tsinghua University.

Su's article is the first to reveal that North China's severe haze pollution is partly caused by the sulfate formed by sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide in alkaline aerosol water trapped in fine particles. The finding, covered by Xinhua News Agency, The Paper and Huanqiu Network, represents significant progress in the research project by JNU and the Max Planck Society. The National Nature Science Funding Committee has also approved the project as part of the key funding project On the Causes and Coping Mechanism of China's Combined Air Pollution.
