A delegation from the University of Cape Town (UCT) in South Africa visited Jinan University on Dec. 8. JNU Vice President Hong An held an official talk with Prof. Mamokgethi Phakeng, vice president of UCT, and Prof. Evance Kalula, head of its International Academic Cooperation Department. Pu Ruoqian, director of the Office of International Exchange and Cooperation, and Deng Di, assistant to the dean of the Management School, were present.

Hong introduced JNU's history and openness to overseas Chinese and scientific research. Phakeng express the wish that JNU and UCT could develop deep cooperation in medicine, business, journalism, intellectual property and other advantageous disciplines. Kalula proposed that the two universities start exchange programs to advance communication between students and teachers from the two universities.

Hong made an active response to these proposals and spoke highly of UTC's scientific strength. Pu introduced the detailed exchange program and said the China Scholarship Council was likely to establish a scholarship program in September.

Formerly known as the South Africa Academy, established in 1829, UCT is the oldest university in South Africa. As a leading academic research center in Africa, the university enjoys a worldwide reputation in scientific research capacity, with two Nobel Prize winners on its faculty. Currently it has more than 17,000 students, one-third of whom are postgraduates, and six colleges: business; engineering and the design and environment; health sciences; humanities; law, and the Institute of technology. Vice President Song Xianzhong paid the first visit to UCT in September 2015, expressing JNU's good wishes on exchange and cooperation.
