The five-time Olympic champion Wu Minxia and bronze medalist Fu Yuanhui visited JNU's south campus on Nov. 11 at the invitation of Ma Youheng, chairman of the Alumni Association. They rode bicycles with teachers and students, planted trees with their own hands and shared their thoughts about the university's 110th-anniversary. More than 500 faculty members, students and university leaders participated, including Chairman Ma Youheng and Vice President Zhang Ronghua.

Zhang said sports have traditionally been one of JNU's strengths. As early as the Republican period (1912 to 1949), more than 10 JNU students participated in the 1936 Berlin Olympics and achieved great results. Since then, JNU athletes have won honors in competitions at various levels. In recent years, excellent athletes have emerged at JNU, including the new "Asian Flying Man," the track and field star Su Bingtian; the two-time Olympic swimmer He Jianbin, and Chen Aisen, the double gold medalist in platform diving at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. All have demonstrated sportsmanship and won honors for both China and the university.
Ma said the two athletes' visit brought glory to JNU as it celebrates its 110th-anniversary. While exhibiting sportsmanship, he said, they have also overcome life challenges, and their spirit of innovation and never giving up are a worthy lesson for JNU students.
