Recently, Professor Zhao Youbin, Dean of the School of Translation Studies, was profiled as an outstanding alumnus of the University of Waikato in a lengthy report entitled “Chinese Professor a New Zealand Literature Expert” on its website for the 50th anniversary celebration (http://alumni.waikato.ac.nz/profiles/chinese-professor-a-new-zealand-literature-expert).
As a national university of New Zealand, the University of Waikato has been compared to the University of Harvard, having a similar reputation in the Southern Hemisphere for its high quality education. Professor Zhao’s love affair with the literature of New Zealand began when he was a student majoring in English literature at the University of Waikato from 1990 to 1992. Over the past twenty years or so, he has devoted himself to New Zealand literature studies, publishing several dozen academic papers and several monographs in the academist field, such as The Novel Art of Mansfield, Singing on the Land of the Long White Cloud-A Study on the Postcolonial Literature of New Zealand.
Most recently, Professor Zhao has been engaged in two major projects in the field of New Zealand literature studies, namely the social science project granted by the Ministry of Education (2010) ad the collaboration project for social science granted by Guangdong Province (2013). Being an outstanding expert in New Zealand literature within the filed of foreign literature studies in China, Professor Zhao has been called a messenger of Sino-New Zealand friendship and constantly favored by the Embassy of New Zealand in China, most notably receiving large amounts of books from time to time relating to his research.
