On December 15th 2013, the final round of the 2nd International School British Parliamentary English Debate Competition was held by the Academic Affairs Department.
There were 6 groups and they had 3 debates in all. MBBS-4 won first prize, 12CST, and 12IET/13IET received second prize, and MBBS-3, 12CM and 13CGA received third prize.
The first debate was between MBBS-4 and 13CGA, debating on “Should Doctors Lie to Patients Even for Their Own Good”. The competition was so intense that the audience was deeply impressed. “Telling lies to patients can release their sorrow and give them hope”, “Doctors have no rights to tell patients when they will die, because they are not gods”, were some opinions from 13CGA. Also, MBBS-4 gave us some excellent opinions, “Nowadays, many patients will search their symptoms on the Internet and have a concept about their situation. They may probably find out that the doctors are lying and no longer trust them.”
Then came 12CST and MBBS-3; their topic was: “Grant those diagnosed with a terminal illness the right to access treatment that has not completed clinical testing”.
Finally it was 12,13IET vs 12CM, who debated the topic: “Should Doctors Administer Life Sustaining Treatment to Those Pronounced Brain Dead”.
At the end of the competition, some teachers gave the debaters some suggestions, “Control your speed when you are speaking. I know the time is limited, but you should convey clearly what you want to say.”
