The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Institute of CNS Regeneration (GHMICR), formerly known as Collaborative Laboratory for Brain Function and Health Between HKU and JNU, was founded in October 2008, and established in November 2012. Having developed a close collaboration with universities in Hong Kong, Macau and internationally, GHMICR has now become a major research institute for the regeneration and repair of the central nervous system, with four major themes: molecular regulation of neurogenesis, repair of spinal cord injuries, pathogenesis, and treatment for brain injuries and optical nerve injuries.

GHMICR is now a Key Medical Research Laboratory of Guangdong Province and Co-innovation Center of Neuroregeneration, International (Incl. Hong Kong, Macao & Taiwan) Science and Technology Cooperation Innovation Platform in Universities. Since its establishment, GHMICR has received more than 50 research grants from the national and Guangdong provincial governments, producing three National

Key Projects and 15 National Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Projects. GHIMICR has published 192 research articles in SCI journals, including Nature Medicine, PNAS and the Journal of Neuroscience and Neuropsychopharmacology. In addition, GHMICR has made outstanding achievements in the advancement transformation of scientific research, carrying out a series of clinical transformational studies and experiments. It now has 11 full-time researchers, including one member of Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) and one member of Royal Academy of Engineering (United Kingdom).

GHMICR has established long-term collaboration with foreign universities and research institutes. Distinguished neuroscientists have been appointed as visiting professors for research collaboration and postgraduate supervision. GHMICR has invited more than 30 outstanding foreign scientists annually and held a series of international symposiums and meetings. On Sept. 23, 2015, GHMICR successfully held the Brain Function and Health and International Neural Regeneration Symposium, at which Sir. John Gurdon, 2012 Nobel laureate in Physiology and Medicine, was invited as a keynote speaker.
