College of Foreign Studies
The College of Foreign Studies is a leader in foreign-language education at Jinan University and includes some of the most prestigious departments of English language and literature, business English studies, Japanese language and literature, French language and literature, and English Language Teaching.
Beginning as a department in 1927, the college was one of the first authorized by the state to confer master's degrees. Currently the college offers master's programs in English language and literature, translation and interpretation, and Japanese language and literature. The master's program in foreign linguistics and applied linguistics focuses on functional linguistics, phonology, cognition and discourse analysis, and the philosophy of language.
The College is actively attempting to expand its overseas academic communication and cooperation. It maintains good cooperation with universities in the UK, Australia, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Its main research areas cover linguistics, literature and translation. In 2012 the college was awarded the Guangdong Provincial "Key Discipline" award for foreign language and literature.
