If Wang Yue had chosen to be a scholar rather than the academic dean of Sun Yat-sen University or the vice president of Jinan University, he would have made more academic achievement in history, at least with more papers and monographs to be published. However, he chose to write his chapters on the development history of the two universities. He practiced his educational concept on a more general level, benefiting more students and receiving more gratitude. These were the words of Research Fellow Xia Quan, JNU's deputy party secretary and doctoral supervisor in professional modern Chinese history, while recalling the life of the former president.
(Wang Yue, former president of JNU)
When JNU was rebuilt in Guangzhou in 1958, Tao Zhu, secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Committee and president of JNU at that time, recruited a group of administrators and scholars from Sun Yat-sen University including Wang, then 55.
Wang was already 75 when JNU reopened in 1978 (JNU suspended for the Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976). The difficulty he faced seems unimaginable today because it was a time of creating order out of chaos, of recovering the crumbling economy, and before reform and opening-up. He shouldered the responsibility in the great need of the university and the country.
Wang always did his duty and knew how to run a university according to education laws. His concept of civilian education was related to his humble beginnings and the influence of the educator and reformer Tao Xingzhi when he was studying in National Southeast University. Wang advocated and actively practiced Tao's education concept. His contribution was perfectly summarized in Prof. Wang Yue, an outstanding student to practice the ideas of Tao Xingzhi, Guan Zhendong’s preface to Selection of Wang Yue's Poems and Essays.
In educational practice, Wang was one of the major forces and important pioneers of overseas Chinese higher education as academic dean of Sun Yat-sen University and vice president of JNU.
