Jinan University held its 2019 Commencement on the Shipai, Zhuhai, Shenzhen and Panyu campuses from June 26 to 28. President Song Xianzhong, Party Secretary Lin Rupeng, and other authorities from school offices and departments attended, along with alumni, parent delegations and the 2019 graduates.

Song, also chairman of the academic degrees evaluation committee, congratulated the graduates on their academic accomplishments. On their new journey, Song encouraged them to devote their lives to learning and practicing how to be good people, contributing their talents and wisdom to China's innovation development.

Looking back on JNU's 113-year history, Song reaffirmed the profound meaning of the school motto Loyalty, Credibility, Sincerity and Piety. He said he hoped the graduates could internalize these values and act on them, keeping in mind the beginner's mind and mission, the commitment and spirits of JNU's children, and their teachers' and families' care and expectation for their dreams. 

Before the degree-awarding ceremony, parents and teachers stood up to congratulate the 2019 graduates, and all the graduates stood up to pay tribute to them in turn.

This year, 7,752 degrees were awarded: 4,180 bachelor's degrees, 3,287 master's degrees and 285 doctorates. Among them, 399 graduate students and 276 undergraduates were commended.

All the graduates went onstage in turn, received their degree certificates, performed the tassel-turning ceremony and then passed through the degree gate.
Fan Yaowei, a 2001 advertising alumnus of the Journalism Department and founder and chief creative officer of the internet company F5, urged the new graduates to choose careers according to their own strengths, adapt to fierce professional competition, master foreign languages and find their place in the world.

Zhao Jun, a 2004 alumnus in ophthalmology and vice president of Shenzhen Eye Hospital, told the graduates that whatever their jobs were, they should aim in the direction and forefront of the industry development and pursue their dreams by being down-to-earth and keeping learning to improve themselves.  
A representative of the graduates delivered a speech about graduation and led all the teachers and students to recite the JNU motto.

Four years ago, Chen Tong, a new graduate from Hong Kong, was admitted to JNU, where she acquired knowledge of her major, carried out innovative entrepreneurship projects and had the chance to study at famous universities abroad. JNU is so beautiful with its unique charm, fine tradition, abundant teachers and diligent students, she said. JNU is an all-around strong academic atmosphere, with warm humanistic care and magical development opportunities, which makes the place the start of one's dream. Chen plans to devote herself to the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area – her contribution to China's rejuvenation.
