The motto of our university ¡°Loyalty, Sincerity, Integrity and Respect¡± is quoted from Analects of Confucius , which was compiled by the students of Confucius to record his sayings and some of his outstanding student's sayings. It is recorded in it that one day Zi Zhang, a student of Confucius asked how a man could conduct himself to get along well with others. Then Confucious said: ¡°Be sincere and conscientious when you speak to someone. Be earnest and serious when you do something. If you can do these, you will get along well with others even if you live in the most barbaric places. If you do not do these, even if you live in your own area, will you get long well? Keep these principles in mind all the time, whether you are standing or whether you are driving a carriage. These principles are right there inside yourself. With these, you will get along well with all people¡±. What Confucius said consisted of the two aspects of being an upright person, namely, ¡°word¡± and ¡°conduct¡±, and the passage could be summarized as ¡°one should be serious and responsible for his word and his conduct¡±. ¡°Loyalty, Sincerity, Integrity and Respect¡±, which has been mentioned or quoted in many other pre-Qin books and records, especially in Confucian classics, was then regarded as a highly generalized moral concepts and has been inherited and passed on by generations of Chinese as symbol of virtues. In these several thousand years, it has been given more connotations:
¡°Loyalty, Sincerity, Integrity and Respect ¡± was already our school motto before 1949, and has deeply rooted in the memory of the our old alumni. It becomes a tie between the old and new generations of Jinan Alumni.
