Nanjing (1906-1923)

Jinan University was built in an epoch of difficulties and reverse when China gradually declined to a semicolonial and semifeudal society after the opium War occurred in the mid-nineteenth century. Beseiged by internal and external difficulites and hardships, the Qing government had to seek new ways to adapt to and survive the changing world. The government conducted a series of refor: abolishing the imperial examination system had lasted for more than a thousand years in China and building new schools, opening the country to foreign trade, and changing their attitude of discrimination toward the overseas Chinese. Then in 1906, after conducting surveys on educational situations of overseas Chinese communities, the Qing government set up Jinan School in Nanjing, which enrolled overseas Chinese students especially. the school day commenced on March 23 rd the nexe year. Mr. Zheng Hongnian took up the post as the first headmaster of the school. The name of the school ¡° Jinan ¡± is from an classic acient Chinese work, which embedded the underlying purpose of the school: to spread the Chinese Culture to all corners of the world. The school adopt a plan to maintain a student population of 500 students.

Then in 1917, the school was renamed as National Jinan School. The school secessively set up two departments (education and business), cram school, middle school and primary school. In 1921, the Business department was relocated to Xujiahui of Shanghai, and in the same year it merged with South-east University into Shanghai University of Commerce. In March of 1922, the Board of trustees of Jinan School was founded, of which the members included Huang Yanpei, Fang Yuanlian, Yuan Xitao, Lin Wenqing, Shi Liangcai, Zheng Hongnian, Zhang Xuan etc.
