Five more JNU professors have joined the 13th group of members of the Recruitment Program of Global Experts, or Thousand Talents Plan, according to the list released May 28 by the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee. The additions bring the university's total to 26.
They are Suo Zucai and Cui Ying, professors in the College of Life Science and Technology; Ren Kui of the College of Information Science and Technology and Cybersecurity; Zhou Qinghua of the Biomedical Translational Research Institute; and Wang Qiaoqiao of the Institute for Environmental and Climate Research.
Suo and Ren became two of the program's long-term innovative talents. Suo, 52, is a leading researcher in enzyme kinetics and nucleic acid replication. Ren, 39, mainly studies cloud computing security, wireless systems security, and crowdsourcing-based large-scale data acquisition.
Zhou, Wang and Cui joined as young talents. Zhou, 35, has come up with a series of original findings after years of fundamental and clinical research on disease models and human disease samples. A 34-year-old Harvard Ph.D., Wang has done postdoctoral research at the Max Planck Society and achieved remarkable outcomes in atmospheric science. Cui, 34, is a Ph.D. at the Pennsylvania State University and is currently a postdoctoral researcher at Dartmouth University. She studies supergene geochemistry, paleoecology and paleoclimatology through stable isotope and model inversion.
China initiated the Recruitment Program of Global Experts at the end of 2008 to bring home top Chinese talents who have studied abroad over the next five to ten years. The program called for strategic scientists or leading talents to make breakthroughs in key technologies or enhance China's high-tech industries and emerging disciplines. The program relies on National Key Innovation Projects; National Key Disciplines and National Key Laboratories; state-owned enterprises, commercial and financial institutions; and various industrial parks, mainly high-tech development zones.
